Dropped kerb - vehicular crossing in Leicester
You can apply to get a proper constructed crossing that allows for you to cross a verge or footpath with your vehicle to access the highway or road. The property must be yours and you will have to pay for the work. Before any work can begin, you will need permission from us.
Before you apply for a dropped kerb
You should first check the Highway programme of works before you submit your application. This will let you know if any street-related works are planned.
The programs can change due to a variety reasons. These lists may not be complete so they should only be used as a reference. The fees are non-refundable. All applications and all works are at your own risk.
Dropped kerb applications to highways teams must include permission from our planning division.
You will need to apply for planning permission.
- The site for your proposed dropped kerb can be found on a road that has been classified as either A,B or C
You can use our adopted road gazetteer for the Leicestershire class of roads. The first letter is the road number. Unclassified roads are not likely to require permission. The gazetteer is not able to show any private or unadopted roads. You should contact the landowner if your road isn’t listed. This could be a developer or housing association. Permission is typically granted by the street manager. The Land Registry should be capable of confirming who owns the land.

- Property is more than just a house for one family. Flats, maisonettes, and industrial properties are all acceptable.

Apply for a dropped kerb
Once you have obtained planning or development permission, you are eligible to apply to the highways department.
You should include:

- If required, permission from property owner
- Application fee: £132.30
You can pay the fee with a card. This fee cannot be refunded.
The highways team will tell you if your application has been approved.

Contractors doing the work
In order to give permission to the contractor, we will need all information about their qualifications.
If you have been approved for your application, you will need our reference number.
You might need additional forms or charges if:
- Temporary traffic signals (temporary lights) are necessary for safe work. Section 171 application (PDF 398KB).
- Moving a street light is required
